GENEVA, May 21 (Xinhua) -- FIFA conveyed its deepest condolences on Sunday to the families and friends impacted by the tragic incidents at the Cuscatlan Stadium in El Salvador during a match between Alianza FC and Club Deportivo FAS.
"I extend my deepest sympathies to the families and friends of those who lost their lives in the tragic events in El Salvador during the match between Alianza FC and Club Deportivo FAS," FIFA president Infantino said.
"Our thoughts and prayers, alongside those of FIFA and the global football community, are with those affected. We extend our support to the people of the Republic of El Salvador, the Concacaf Confederation, the Salvadoran Football Association, and the Primera Division de Futbol de El Salvador during this challenging time."
A minute of silence was observed before all four FIFA Under-20 World Cup matches in Argentina on Sunday, while the flags of El Salvador, FIFA, and all associated confederations were flown at half-mast at FIFA's headquarters in Zurich.
At least 12 people died, and more than 100 were injured in a crowd crush at a football stadium in El Salvador on Saturday.
